On April 16th, a ferry crossing the ocean to Jeju island (a little island located South to the coast of Korea) collided with a submerged rock. But this ship wasn’t just any ship; it was a ship holding 475 high school students who were going on an extended field trip to the island.
Weather conditions were terrible that day, and with the heavy fog delaying the departure time of the ferry, the captain decided to go faster than usual, and take a short cut through the ocean. He didn’t realize that the short cut he was taking was notorious for submerged rocks in the water.
As the ferry hit the rock, it keeled over in less than two hours, and everything was chaos inside. A photo of a student texting his mom just before the ship got completely wrecked is above.
Thank god at least 179 students were able to escape and reunite with their parents. However, 272 students are missing, stuck somewhere inside the ship, and already the body count is up to 24. This really breaks my heart as a fellow Korean, and I can even dare to understand the hearts of mothers and fathers of the children stuck in that boat.
So, please pray for Korea and encourage one another to stay strong!!
